Earth-Painting
Painting with earth and water
Austria
Wolfgang Hofer has transformed the probably most primeval technique of painting only with natural clay into a new form of Art denoted by the terms
"loam- or earth-painting techniques", or in german "Lehmmalerei".
He made his debut as a painter in the Viennese Künstlerhaus in 1982. He found at that time a style of painting that might be described as "Surreal
Baroque". The first major work was the wall painting "Village-Panorama" 8 x 3 m, made at Michelstetten , Lower-Austria in 1986.
The first Loam-Fresk
The first Loam-Fresk in Europe and last bigger Work of Hofer in Austria is painted on the internal walls of the parish pavilion at Alberndorf in the year 1991. The first Earth-Paintings were exhibited in Vienna in 1992.

During the last 15 years Hofer has tried out a few hundred types of natural clay mixed only with water, on different
kinds of grounds – paper, canvas, reed, straw, plaster, or raw concrete.

The little Atelier Earth Spirit

close to the National-Park
During the last 16 years Hofer lives and works in the south of Poland.

The building was designed and built by the artist. The most parts of the studio are hand-made of recycled materials.

The Visitor reaches over a handmade ladder and is welcomed by the drawings of angels and saints - and the artist of course.

Loam-Ikons and Christian Sprituality
In the beginning the sacred formulas of the ancient Byzantine fresco were modified by the artist into a new technique for the mural painting.

After ten years he startetd to paint christian ikons with the "body of earth". The painter regulary takes up the spiritual advice of the Jesuit
Order in Cracow for his studies.

Educational and therapeutical use of earth
In 1993 Hofer showed the effects of the earth-murral-paintings in a kindergarden for autistic children in Cracov.
Since the mid-1990s exists a co-operation with the Wroclawska Szkola Przyszłosci (Wroclaw School of the Future),
the Stowarzyszenie Pomocy Dzieciom Niepelnosprawnym “Badzcie z nami” (‘Come With Us', an Association helping Disabled Children) and different other institutions in Poland.

The first reviews in the media from 1992 in Cracow
Looking at Hofer's paintings, I come to the conclusion that they are closely akin to what our interwar masters, Waliszewski and Felicjan Szczesny Kowarski,
did in the art of wall painting here, by the Vistula River .

When one looks at him and listens to him, one cannot fail to notice that his way of being features what is surely lacking in our young people.
"Echo Krakowa"
It really is just earth and water.
"Eko.Styl"
Clay is not just beige. Beautiful red, intense yellow, matt green (…). These paintings are easy to destroy.
One mustn't dust them with a damp cloth.

(…) it was just one of those rare cases when you find people with an authentic and natural gift for the educational seduction of children's imagination, for charming and enchanting them. Yes, so it was!
